Henrik Pontoppidan (1857 – 1943) var en af Danmarks helt store forfattere. I 1917 tildeltes han Nobelprisen i litteratur (sammen med den i dag helt glemte Karl Gjellerup). Hen debuterede i 1881 og allerede omkring 1890 var han en – efter udgivelsen af en række noveller og små romaner – en anerkendt og populær forfatter.
