1. Export from Overcast
- In Overcast, open Settings.
- Choose Export OPML (extended). The extended file is the one that carries your playlists, priorities, stars and progress; the plain one is your subscriptions alone.
2. Get the file to Parasocial
- Save the file to Files on this iPhone.
- Or AirDrop it to the iPad or Mac you will use Parasocial on. Either is fine; the import is the same.
3. Import into Parasocial
- In Parasocial, open Library and tap Import. It is also in Settings, under Import from Another App.
- Tap Choose a File and pick the export. Your shows, playlists, priorities, stars and progress come back one by one, and the screen tells you when it is finished.
FAQ
What comes over from Overcast?
Everything in the extended export: your subscriptions, your smart and manual playlists with the shows in each one, your per-show priorities, your stars, which episodes you have played, and how far into each episode you were. Parasocial rebuilds all of it. Stars come over as bookmarks.
What does not come over?
The file is a list, not audio, so episodes download again in Parasocial. The file carries subscriptions, playlists, priorities, stars, played state and progress, and that is what comes over; anything else you set up in Overcast stays in Overcast.
Why the extended export and not the plain one?
There are two export options. The plain OPML is your subscriptions and nothing else. Export OPML (extended) is the one that carries your playlists, priorities, stars and progress, and it is the one Parasocial reads for all of that. A plain OPML still works; you get your shows and start fresh.
Does Overcast stay installed?
Yes. Exporting copies your library; it changes nothing in Overcast. Keep both for as long as you like and delete Overcast when you are ready, or never.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The import runs on your device and the file goes nowhere. Parasocial subscribes to each show in it, and from then on your subscriptions, playlists and progress sync between your own devices the way they always do.
Can I do this on a Mac or an iPad?
Yes. Parasocial imports on iPhone, iPad and Mac. Export from Overcast on your iPhone, get the file to whichever device you like, and open Import there.
What about a file from another podcast app?
Any player's OPML export works and brings your subscriptions. Overcast's extended export is the one that brings the rest.
