In "Orlando. Eine Biographie" geht es um Macht, Posen und Konventionen. Virginia Woolf reflektiert die Stellung der Frau, die Aggression des Britischen Empire und die machtpolitischen Gründe der Geschichte. Dabei demontiert sie satirisch Stand, Status, Geschlecht und Geschichtsschreibung. Für die schillernde Figur Orlando stand ihre Freundin Vita Sackville-West Modell, eine adelige Abenteurerin.
